"House Party", "Boomerang" Producer - Warrington Hudlin - Tonight at 9pm EST

On the next episode of The Double Down Film Show we'll converse with Producer / Director - Warrington Hudlin of the notable Hudlin Brothers producing/directing team. With his brother Reginald Hudlin in the director's chair, Warrington helped to fuel the Black film renaissance of the early 90's by producing such hit films as House Party and Boomerang starring Eddie Murphy. He also produced the animated hit Bebe Kids starring the late Robin Harris as well as the provocative sci-fi feature, Cosmic Slop.

Warrington currently serves as the President of the Black Filmmaker Foundation (BFF) and is the Founder & Chief of the DVRepublic.org and the CastAndCrewOfColor.org online communities.

  • What's the FUTURE of indie distribution?
  • How can the filmmakers HARNESS the power of the web?
  • What is the state of filmmaking for people of COLOR?
  • What HAPPENED to the Black film renaissance?

Boomerang Movie PosterWe'll get to the bottom of all these questions and more in our exclusive interview with producer, director and media community organizer, Warrington Hudlin, this week on The Double Down Film Show.

DSLR Camera Debate: Cinematographer vs. Producer

Let me start off by saying two things here:

1) I thoroughly disagree with the general viewpoint of this video and

2) Nevertheless, I think it's very funny and presents a very teachable guerrilla moment about common strains in the dynamic of the Producer / Cinematographer relationship as well as filmmaking elitism.

Watch and we'll discuss the very serious filmmaking debate(s) it raise in a future blog post. Enjoy...

Cinematographer vs. Producer

Created by nicholasdh using Xtranormal.com (a "filmmaking" web site that's a whole other debate unto itself) and to my man Alex Houston who posted it on Facebook.

Everyone's A Producer

Often times indie filmmakers glean whatever techniques they find useful from traditional producing. Well, in times when producing and distribution have gone topsy turby, one always needs to be open to new ideas. Well I just want to share some innovative methods that have been getting some attention and some success.

Last month’s Rotterdam Film Festival saw producer Rutger Wolfson including entire audiences into the fundraising of a film. Imagine that: every person in every seat turned into a co-producer for your film!

To see how he did it, check out the explanation of his “coin” method in the full article here.

Producer Monty Ross on the Next Double Down Film Show!

Our special guest on the next Double Down Film Show will be notable film producer, Monty Ross. Monty began his filmmaking career as an acting student at Clark Atlanta University where he had the remarkable experience of being classmates with the likes of Spike Lee, Jasmine Guy, Bill Nunn, and Samuel L. Jackson amongst others.

During a filmmaking career that spans from the 80’s to present day, Monty was one of Spike Lee’s first producing collaborators who co-produced Spike's films, She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn, Malcolm X and more.

  • How can what you don’t know work to your advantage?

  • What do talented producers look for when choosing directors?

  • How can you develop your own “do or die” attitude and methodology?

  • How can you choose the right project and director to work with?

  • What are the red flags of a potentially bad filmmaking partnership?

Monty Ross will give you his straight-forward advice and candid anecdotes on all of the above in this extended interview on the realities of pushing film projects all the way through from concept to completion with limited resources.

Close the gap between filmmaking theory and filmmaking reality every Wednesday night. The back door to film school is now open.

Producers In All Shapes and Sizes

The title "producer" can mean many things on a production. There are multiple different kinds of producers whose duties can intertwine and overlap. If you don't know which type of producer(s) you need to pull off your vision or even which producer does what, peep out this great article from my long-time friend and Down and Dirty DV collaborator, Maxie Collier, at his website, UrbanArtsClub.com ...

A Potpourri of Producers

Beyond the fickle world of Hollywood vanity credits, lies a real art form and the true meaning of the title producer:
1. a person who produces.
2. Economics. a person who creates economic value, or produces goods and services.
3. a person responsible for the financial and administrative aspects of a stage, film, television, or radio production; the person who exercises general supervision of a production and is responsible chiefly for raising money, hiring technicians and artists, etc., required to stage a play, make a motion picture, or the like...

The Nuts and Bolts of Running a Production Tonight on the Double Down

On the next Double Down Film Show we’re gonna get down to the nuts and bolts of production coordinating a feature film. What are the day-to-day considerations of running a feature film set? How do you get and keep two dozen people on the same page day-after-day? What are the most important aspects of the job? How can you hire a good production coordinator for your film?

We’ll discuss all this and more with our special guest Production Coordinator / Producer, Lynn Appelle, who has worked on the producing teams of such films as Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Empire and was one of the producers of co-host Pete Chatmon's Premium. Most notably, Lynn also won an Academy Award for co=producing the documentary short Thoth.
